About the Authors
About the Authors
Betty Nguyen, MD is a physician specializing in dermatology. She was born in Southern California but spent much of her childhood in Georgia, where she grew up on a chicken farm. Betty studied Biology at UCLA, where she was a Gates Millennium Scholar, and earned her MD from UC Riverside on a full-tuition scholarship. Outside of work, Betty is a certified yoga instructor and licensed scuba diver. She also enjoys journalistic writing and cycling.
Brandon Pham, MD is a physician specializing in ophthalmology. He was born and raised in Southern California. Brandon studied Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics at UCLA, where he was a Goldwater Scholar, and earned his MD from Stanford. He is passionate about medical education for students of all ages. In his free time, Brandon enjoys traveling, playing tennis, and running.

I work in a hem/onc office, so I absolutely wanted to purchased this book. It was fantastic! Beautiful pictures. Great flow of information. I left it on my desk so that my coworkers could see it too. It was the hit of the office! The pictures are detailed yet easy to navigate. There are a lot of complicated terminology in hem/onc, so I’m grateful Betty and Brandon provided a glossary with pronunciation. I’ve never seen a book made this well before, and will definitely be referring my friends and family to their books.Overall, 10/10 purchase for anyone (and their kids of course 😇) wanting to learn about a difficult medical field in an easy to digest way!
This is a beautifully illustrated children’s book that introduces young readers to the inner workings of our blood vessels and lymphatics. These books are highly educational and have been enjoyed by multiple generations in our household. We’ve enjoyed them so much that we’ve purchased books in this series as gifts for family, friends, and neighbors’ kids. This installment, Hematology and Oncology for Kids, explains how the cells in the blood are produced (in the bone marrow), how platelets form a clot to stop bleeding, and much more! Great purchase and great gift item. Would recommend it to anyone with curious kids!
Perfect book for kids who are interested in learning more about the human body, especially those who have family/friends with sickle cell disease, leukemia, or lymphoma. I’ve bought every book in this series for my nephews, and it’s been fun learning with them as we read together. I appreciate that the authors don’t shy away from using medical terms but explain them very clearly. For instance, they explain that a complete blood count (CBC) can be used to measure the amounts of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets in our blood. I definitely think most adults will learn something new from reading these books. Highly recommend this series!
My 9 year olddaughter has been saying she wants to be a doctor at St. Jude for years. I was diagnose with cancer this book helped her understand so much about hematology and oncology field.
Hi, I am a MLT and I work for an oncology center. My daughter and friends always see me in scrubs and ask if I am a nurse and I tell them no. I wanted to give the kiddos a better picture of what I do for work and when all the parents were asked to sign up to be a class reader I thought it would be a great opportunity. The kids loved this book and it got to understand so much and asked so many interesting questions. I am so grateful there are amazing books like this and the entire collection. I really love how it breaks down everything nicely for a child to digest. I have ordered some more books from them as well, and I will be dispersing them through my nieces and nephews. Thank you <3

Very good book
This book provides a lot of info regarding the origin of various blood cells, various issues if we have too much or too little of them, and about cancer. Cancer can be a sad topic to discuss in general. I think this book though provides great insight from a medical perspective to help kids have a better understanding of this. Some info may be a bit advanced for my 4 year old but I was quite impressed when one day he said he had to build up his white blood cells to help him fight his cold, after he read this book.
