As the uncle of wild 4yo kid, I am always on the lookout for engaging educational books that can teach my nephew about the world. The Medical School for Kids series does just that. These books embody the value of diversity, science, and diversity IN science. He was enthralled by the colorful illustrations and the anatomical descriptions. Of course, he probably understands very little, but getting him excited about things he doesn't know is part of the journey. Would highly recommend if you are looking for a kid-friendly book that gets your child excited about science and medicine!
My 4 year old really enjoyed this book! He’s so curious and loves reading. This was really well-written and illustrated.
As an MD myself (though not in dermatology), I really appreciate all the detail that went into the diagrams, including different anatomical cross sections of the eye. I think it will take reading this book several times to my son for all the new words to really “stick.” There’s so much great information! My son’s favorite page is the picture of the retina — he says it looks like mars!! Will read this book over and over again to my son until he knows it all
Probably too advanced for my 2-year-olds, but I sure learned a lot! My kids do love all the colorful pictures and they will grow into this book soon enough. Lots of great information that really teaches kids how the eye works. Love the last few pages that show pictures of how people with cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration see the world. The diagrams are educational and the illustrations are gorgeous. Wish this book was around when I was a kid!
My 3-yo likes it and it was useful in prepping her for an eye appointment. It’s a cute book, but it feels like something that was printed independently. The information is good, but the material is not good quality and likely won’t hold up to wear and tear.
This book teaches children so much about opthalmology. It is great for adults as well. I love that the pictures show children how different conditions effect vision.
Easy to understand For kids.
This is a wonderful, simple intro to the field of ophthalmology. I like that it is written by doctors but is simple enough for a child to understand and also complex enough for an adult to also learn and enjoy. I really like that at the end of the book there is a vocabulary section and a question and answer section in the back to review what you learned in the book. It's done really well. The book is kind of pricey for a paperback but I think it is worth it for the knowledge.
My son went to the eye doctor for the first time several months ago and he declared after we left that he was going to be an eye doctor (and still says it to this day). This book is perfect for young kids to learn the basics of the eye!
My 7 year old loves this book
Great books. Do you have a book on the specialty of preventive medicine, occupational medicine, or public health/epi?
I definitely would recommend this if you have a kid with any eye problems or who needs glasses. This book explains the cause and symptoms of cataracts, glaucoma, and a few other things.
If you are looking for a book for kids to learn about medicine early, I would highly recommend this book. They broke it down into the basic concept, which is kid-friendly content. 100% highly recommend!
I appreciated the authors' ability to breakdown this information for the readers. Spreading this knowledge can help others in less fortunate parts of the world where eye conditions mentioned are very common yet undertreated.
Are you worried that you children will be susceptible to antivax? Do you want your kids to develop confidence in science and medicine? Look no further! There is such a lack of educational materials to acquaint children with medicine and, if anything, making the doctor visits less scary. I hope these authors will make additional books for middle school students as well. To many youngsters, medicine is such a mysterious concepts, having these books will bridge that gap.
The authors’ ability to put complex medical ideas into simple explanations and illustrations is amazing. I love that I am learning with my nephew as I am reading these books to him. I even showed the books to my mom (who has mild cataracts), and she also loved it and said these books are valuable for adults as well! Kudos to the authors!
I have several nephews who will be starting school soon and I am always trying to find educations gifts that will spark their curiosity and promote a love for learning. I think this definitely fits the bill! This book is well-written and beautifully illustrated. It's also impressively informative for a picture . I don't think I learned about how nearsightedness and farsightedness worked until high school! Will be looking forward to seeing more books like this in other medical specialties.
